Save the Patio

Background

You're smart enough to know that there is a story here.

Like you, we're trying to get to the bottom of it.

In February, 2016, city officials began looking at ways to address parking, traffic, noise, and crime in some of Dallas' most popular dining and entertainment neighborhoods.

In order to help Dallas Police enforce the laws on the books, some of restaurants raised $50,000 dollars to increase foot patrols in one neighborhood. In another neighborhood, residents began conducting their own safety patrols. What we heard from officials was that the city did not have the resources to make our neighborhoods safe.

On Nov. 18, 2016, city staff announced a public meeting "to look into possible amendments to the Dallas Development Code for:
1) Parking requirements for outdoor entertainment areas; and
2) Development of a late hours overlay to regulate personal service & retail uses that operate late at night."

That was when it became clear that city officials were kicking the tires of new ordinances that would save them from enforcing existing laws. What raised concerns further for restaurant and bar owners plus mixed-use developers? Invitations to this meeting were only extended to "homeowners and representatives of many homeowner associations."

When the business community later became aware of the meeting and inquired with city staff, city officials changed course and opened this meeting to those most affected by these possible amendments ... and Save the Patio was born.
